newurbanmom009-12511Last week, Sharon McMillan from New Urban Mom invited me to be a guest on her new podcast. I’m so excited about Sharon’s podcast and her enthusiasm about reviving a greener, urban lifestyle. Sharon is another big promoter of local shopping and truly “living” in your own local community.

In her second episode, we talked specifically about shopping and things unexpectedly turned a bit personal for a few moments. If you’ve ever been curious about my past and how I came to have the outlook I have on shopping, then you defitely want to listen to Show 3 - Living in the Moment.

Stop by and welcome Sharon to the world of podcasting. We could all learn a thing or two from Sharon to make our communities and overall environment positive, productive and prosperous places to live!

In honor of Earth Day, we’re talking about ways to be more earth-conscious when we go shopping.

My guest this week is Tiffany Washko of Nature Moms and we discuss the dangers of plastic, why not all plastic is recyclable, and 7 questions she asks herself before making a purchase. These questions are simple yet powerful because your decision to buy a particular product could greatly impact the earth.

We also discussed Tiffany’s Article about the book Shopping Yourself to Safety and why the book’s author thinks we’re “seeking to isolate ourselves from a large, toxic world.” A very thought-provoking article!

Product Name:
VTech V.Smile TV Learning System PLUSSubmitted by:
Megan Cahill; Louisville, KY
Rating: 8

Description:
Vtech has come out with a new fun and educational game console in the V-Smile Learning System recommended for children ages 3-6.

The item comes with one joystick and an Alphabet Park Smartridge game cartridge. It plugs into your TV audio and video jacks. An AC adapter is available separately, but batteries may be used. A joystick is available giving the option to use the two-player mode on many V-Smile Smartridges.

Review:
Your children will enjoy the simple graphics and the bright buttons. With a huge range of activities including learning the alphabet and lessons in friendship, your child will get hours and hours of entertainment from this toy. That will give you the break you need while maintaining the piece of mind that comes with a VTech product.

All your younger children will love the V-Smile system, with its colorful joystick, buttons, and bright graphics. There are many games available for the game system for younger and older children.

Turn your home into a fun learning center. The VTech V-Smile Learning System Plus is a fantastic system that will help your child to grow and learn as quickly as possible from the safety of your TV screen.

Criticism:
The Battery life is a bit short and the second joystick and AC adapter pack must be purchased separately. Some younger children could have trouble understanding the V-Smile Smartridge games.

Trivia for Dummies Board Game - Review

April 15, 2008 | 1 Comment

Product Name:
Trivia for Dummies Board Game
Submitted by:
Sandra Overstreet; Dunnsville, VA
Rating:8

Description:
Trivia for Dummies is a board game for 3 to 4 players and for ages 12 to adult. There are two decks of cards with this game, answer cards and question cards. The players each receive a set of answer cards that are color coordinated with the color of their playing piece. On each of the answer cards are both a number and a color. The players will use these cards to answer the questions. On the set of question cards there are four topics: miscellaneous, color, numbers, and true/false.

Review:
My family loves this game. Don’t let the name fool you, some of
the questions are hard. This game is very fast paced and can be completed very quickly. My 9 and 10 year old even knew quite a few of the answers to the questions.

The board is also set up in the four topics, with a few move forward, and move backward spaces thrown in to mix it up. The first player rolls the dice, moves the number of spaces according to the dice. Then they take a question card and read the question that corresponds with their space on the board. The other players must choose the answer from their answer cards and be the first to put the card in the middle of the board. The person, who gets the answer right, is the person who goes next. Game play ends when you complete a full circle around the board and arrive at the finish spot.

Criticism:
The cons of this game would be that once you go through the question cards a few times you will not find this game very fun, because the questions are easily remembered.
