I ordered the TV dinners. 10 for 29.00. They are called Golden Cuisine. They are delicious. And they are perfect for seniors (which I am not). I ordered them for me and Grammy when I do not feel like cooking. The broccoli cooks to a more tender point than normal TV dinners which is great for seniors with dental issues. And, they are not as highly spiced or as full of fat as normal TV dinners. They come out to 2.90 cents each and are quite a helping. And I think they were worth every penny. Did I mention they had yellow turnips in some and black beans in some. One was crab cake which was full of real crab not fake. Yummy!

If any of you are worried about a senior parent or grandparent who is on their own eating right, you might opt for the Golden Cuisine. Of course, it won't feed them for a month, but it is great for when they are not up to cooking.

This month I am trying the Bread of Life signature box for 35 and adding a 10 lb popcorn chicken for 16 bucks. And, if it works out I may opt to get rid of my big freezer and just live on a box of food a month from them and add fresh fruit and bread as needed.

May 2011 was the only month I've done Angel Food Ministries (1 Bountiful Blessing box), and we have been very happy with the savings we've seen in only the last couple of weeks. For starters, we had no problems with it at all. We brought our own box as the site said to, however, apparently they are all pre-boxed now.

The frozen veggies have all been good (better than canned). I am kind of having fun figuring out how to use the foods and it kind of changes the menu from what we usually do, which is good. We are supplementing the box with fruits and veggies from the store, as well as having to still get other things for lunches (we often have to eat away from home where no microwave is available -- like for school lunch which is $3.50/lunch in elementary school and days where we go to museums or parks).
We (a family of 4) are spending about $20 additional per week in groceries (on things like juice boxes for the lunches, cheese, hot dog buns and veggies).
So for 2 weeks, we averaged $45/week on food (including the AFM box over 2 weeks) and still have 1.5 lbs pork chops, 3/4 lbs. NY strip steak, 2.5 lbs split chicken breasts, 1 bag of waffle fries, 1 lbs of hot dogs, 1 lbs of green beans, and rice left. So we'll probably not have to buy any meat (other than what we do in lunches) this month and will continue to save.

I'm also finding that it is helping me grow as a cook. I was a recipe cook, and now I'm finding that I am using a recipe and then just making all kinds of substitutions (and they are working out).

I just started using this for me and my son. We ordered the $31 box and it keeps the freezer stocked. It keeps me from going to the grocery store several times a week and trying to figure out what to prepare for dinner and has saved us from going out to eat so much. I ordered for April 2011 as well and I hope to continue to have good experiences.

Angel Food Ministries is not timely or dependable. I ordered two boxes of food on February 26. One delivery was rescheduled due to weather, two due to "truck issues." Personally I don't have $70 to throw around and now am faced with ever difficult task of figuring out how to make my remaining $50 for gas to go to work now also get food for my family. I would never use Angel Food Ministries again and am furious to be dupped into believing that they were a good resource for those of us who work hard but make less and less each year.

While I know that one size never truly fits all, the savings we get from Angel Food Ministries simply outweighs any negative experiences we've had and they've only been with things like a soft onion in the produce box!
Because of the savings for my family of 4, I started challenging myself to create recipes where we use all of the food and don't grocery shop at the store for more than staples like baking supplies, bread, extra milk, etc.
I believe in it so much that I even started my own blog to help others who want to make the most out of their Angel Food and kitchen!

I have purchased, from Angel Food Ministries off and on, for a couple years. Most of the food is great. The color of the steaks are unusual and the texture a bit sticky. I wish that some of their produce didn't come from Mexico. It would be good to support the USA only. I just keep praying, for Angel Food Ministries to be able to offer only the best quality foods. I know that God would approve too...

I used Angelfood a couple of times and found the quality, especially the meats to be very bad. I did an experiment I printed out and took the Easter box menu with me, and went shopping. The angelfood Easter box is priced at $36.00. I purchased the items in the box at Walmart, and my total was $ 28.75. That is $7.25 cheaper than Angelfood sells the box for. Angelfood is a scam.

Breakdown:

chicken 7lbs Walmart 6.50
pork Roast 3lbs Walmart 5.84
Baking potatos 4.5lbs Walmart 2.50
Green Beans 2 lbs Kroger 2.50 ( 2x1.25)
corn Cobletts 12 ct Kroger 2.98
stuffing mix 1 pkg

The Angel Food Program is a great food option for those of us on a tight grocery budget. So, THANK YOU, Angel Food Ministries! I only wish they would do away with most of the premade frozen and boxed items and give us more meats, starches, and vegetables to cook ourselves. I so dislike EVERY premade item that has been included in the Signature boxes. To me, most are .99 store quality, if that. Maybe some of you like convenience foods, and I do occassionaly, like maybe spaghetti sauce is ok. But I do like to cook, and would GREATLY APPRECIATE more self-cook items in the Signature boxes. The meat quality, overall, has been good. We've bought the grill boxes, for instance, and the steaks and sausages were very good. Not gourmet, mind you, but very edible and tasty. Last year was the first year, in the past many, that we could actually afford steaks! The large box of boneless/skinless chicken breasts were the best I've ever purchased. There was very little injected water or waste. Meijers and Walmart chicken breasts have ruined many a recipe for me, because of the amount of water injected into the meat.

Also, I've never been pressured to join the church where I pick up the food, but I'm sure they would welcome us. The church where the food is distributed is Methodist, but other Christian churches in the area send volunteers over to help with the food distribution. They do a very good job, and everyone is helpful and friendly.

First time poster here and I just have to express how grateful I am to Angel Food and I have ZERO complaints about the food and it is one well run organization. I paid $62 for two boxes of food (1 Bread of Life and 1 Bountiful Blessings) and I received about $100 - $110 worth of food. I am an experienced shopper (married with two kids, one tween and one young teen) so I know about prices.

The meat has been great and high quality. My only issue was a chicken noodle casserole frozen meal. It was good, just a little bland. Very fixable with some extra spices....and a little salt!

I would say this: If you are very picky and like to prepare a lot of stuff from scratch, this may not be the program for you. And that is fine. If you don't mind some frozen prepared items and need to stretch your dollar, give this program a try. I would also suggest having a lot of freezer space available as a lot of stuff is frozen.

When you go to pick up your order you can expect to check in, get your number then proceed to an area where the boxes are prepared. There a lot of "runners" who will walk you through the process. All were SO FRIENDLY and nice - can't say enough about them. At my pickup place there was a "swap" place to put any items you don't want so others can use them.

Please be aware that Angel Food is a co-op, not a straight up food bank so you are NOT taking food from others who may need it more. You are simply purchasing overstocks to help you supplement your budget.

Between this and Aldi's I have saved SIGNIFICANT dollars on my food budget.

Obviously I'm not a mom, I'm a single, 49 year old, man. I just wanted to say what I think of Angel Food.; I have been going to them for the last three months and I have zero complaints. I read all the complaints about the meat but in my location I have had no problems with it. I mean how could you go wrong with a 5 lb. frozen chicken ? I won't list everything here but the dry foods, nothing wrong, same with milk, eggs. They even gave good desserts. The variety is excellent.. It's in a conveinent location and the people handing out the food were friendly and helped me load my card. If i had to think of one complaint I could see that people who used to have the problems I had when I was in my twenties could easily take advantage of Angel Food because of the fact there's virtually no screening process.

We just picked up our second month's order today - we get the bountiful blessing and fruit/vegetable boxes; and this time we got the Thanksgiving box.

These are NOT the same items I would pick up at the regular grocery store and my 6 year old son (a veyr picky eater) keeps saying, day after day, "Thank you for Angel Food, Mommy!"

Not everything is "perfect" but it's all been edible and really, *** I don't have time to do all couponing and the driving around to 5 different stores to match all the right sales with all the right coupons, with all the right menu planning. I am a single, work-at-home, homeschooling mom with a family who have lives to live. I tried the menu planning based on sales when I lived in a city with everything accessible - it didn't work then - and it sure won't work now where we have limited options and even less time. I applaud those who have the time - I'll pay you to do my shopping for me! ;)

I appreciate Angel Food for the encouraged variety (we'd eat yogurt smoothies, pbj, ice cream and pizza every day if I gave into basic inclinations ;) ), as well as the convenience of just pick it up and go.

Now, I personally cannot have high fructose corn syrup, so those items are either eaten by my son or gifted to friends. But that's not much in each box.

I don't have to go to the store and hunt everything down (I never find everything on my grocery list as it is - AND the longer we're in the store, and the more stores we go to, the more we purchase things we don't need) - instead, I can go in TO ONE STORE with a much shorter list (smoothie ingredients and ice cream! as well as the ingredients for everything we home-make (all baked goods are home-made, as well as cranberry sauces and the like - no HFCS that way)), get out quickly before we splurge on anything - and spend our time baking, with family and running my online business.

I also wonder how much things have improved in recent times. Almost all the "bad" reviews seem to be from 2009 and earlier - and here it is at the end of 2010.

I like it; I'm happy with it; there are some processed things I'd rather not see, but most of it is fine as an occassional treat.

CAVEAT: We don't buy the steak boxes so I can't review them. Did I mention I'm a single, work-at-home, homeschooling mom without child support or state assistance? We don't get the steak box.

I just ordered my first order last month from AFM and I am happy to say I will be ordering again this month. I also am on a tight budget, usually shopping at Walmart or Food4Less for groceries. I have 4 mouths to feed including my own and it can be a bit pricey to do that. I have yet to get as much for my money as I've received from AFM from any other place. All the food I received was good quality, that includes the meat from the steak box and the fruits and veggies from the fruits and veggies box. I would have liked the potatoes in a little better condition, but it was still fine. I'm just thankful for the service provided! I am able to provide food to my family at such a great price. Now I don't know about anyone else, but there are people out there who have nothing and can't get anything close to what you receive in these boxes. I am thankful for these blessings. It's food..food that I have been blessed to receive. As for the church, they have been nothing but nice, and have never pressured us to join them.

I just had my first experience with Angel food ministries. I bought the 30.00 box and the After School box. We have enjoyed everything we got. What a great deal! I agree most of the food is chicken nuggets, etc but my kids like that stuff and I am sure it is healthier than going to McDonald's plus cheaper!

I hope you will give them a chance. I know I will be buying more in the future!

I could have saved money at Wal-Mart or Albertsons. The worst part was that the food was barely edible, if at all. . Most was thrown out. My little dogs wouldn't even eat it.

Even got the kids covered with tator tots, pudding cups and Mac & Cheese.

Pancake mix cheaper if you buy flour and stir in a little baking powder and powdered milk!

I know kids eat that stuff, but you can do much better in a regularly grocery store. Get a huge bag of tator tots for cheap! Stir instant pudding into real milk. You can probably do so much better on even the cheap mac n cheese in the grocery!

The kids like their pudding in the cutesy cups, right?

That's all chemicalized convenience foods, and it's not the best stuff for the kids.

Churches should not be pressuring you to join either! This should be equal opportunity and nondiscriminatory.

I am surprised at the number of negative reviews of AFM. My son and I recently left an abusive home - a move that put us from a 6-figure salaried home to one eligible for reduced price school lunches. The first two months we were out on our own, I relied on food pantries to supplement our very limited food budget. Although there was no cost associated with the pantry food, there was not much of it that we could use. Items were random, unsold "oddities" that even my creative cooking couldn't find a way to use.

I was somewhat apprehensive about AFM. My experience with "Christian Based" food programs had been extremely negative, condescending and guilt ridden. I was THRILLED with the AFM program, church distribution AND quality of food. There has been nothing in any of our boxes that was "inedible"

Maybe my perspective is just a little different. I live in a farming community - 20 miles from a "real" grocery store - and my son and I were without food. I feel it was a blessing to find AFM and will continue to purchase from them.

I just got a box of fruits and veggie box and so far everything looks good. My son didn't like the grapes but I did. The celery has a very chemical taste even after I washed it, but it's been 3 hours since I ate it and I am not sick. I also got an after school box and the corn dogs are good. I chopped up some onion for my tuna. I think this will be a good way not to eat out for a while. I bought some meat to go with the potatoes and carrots. This will last for a while.

I just had my first experience with Angel Food Ministries. I am trying to budget the best that I can being that I am a single mom (widowed thanks to war in Iraq)raising a disabled child all while working full time and furthering my education taking courses through my state's university online.

Not to be picky but I felt that the quality of the items left quite a bit to be desired. I am more than POSITIVE that I have seen most of this stuff, including the meat, at the .99 Only Stores. My stomach churned when I looked at the cuts of meat, the boxed goods and such. The only thing that looks edible are the eggs. I have decided to pack up the $50 worth of food and donate it to my neighbor who thought everything looked great. I have colitis at the age of 32 and I felt everything bubble up when I ate the pizza and was curled up sick the entire weekend as my digestive track went in to revolt.

I feel that I can get GREAT quality and healthier groceries at Trader Joe's, Bountiful Baskets Co-Op and Kroger for a few dollars more and feel much better about mine and my daughter's health.

My other issue was that I felt I couldn't LEAVE the site without the volunteers pressuring for me and my daughter to join their church and I feel that is extremely innapropriate. I do understand that the actions are not meant to be malicious and their intent is in the right place but also offering my child candy is a BAD BAD thing. She is diabetic and I wish they would ask ME before asking my child. I know they meant no harm but still......

Angel Food Ministries has a great concept. It just doesn't work for us but I know it works for others but I will definitely NEVER order again.

I have been ordering now for one year. My family has been very pleased with all the products we have gotten. I am also in the Nashville area. I am wondering if different parts of the country receive different items. AFM sure has helped me with putting food on our table with the economy the way it is. Even trying to shop at Walmart our grocery bill continues to go up so AFM has been a blessing. Try it at least a couple of months.

I have been using AFM for about 6 months now in Nashville TN. I must say that after reading all of the reviews I was hesitant at first glance. However, I thought I would give it a shot since AFM seems to be all over the United States. I can honestly say that the quality of the meats has not disappointed me. The meats were all very lean, tender and good quality. Better than the meat from Kroger I would even say. Additionally, the desserts are usually cookie, lemon cake (manufactured by starbucks!) and baked goods. I have never received processed foods like boxed mac and cheese and etc. I guess it depends on the package you order. The produce is good. I have received such produce as kiwi, whole pineapple (which has been awesome and delicious) avocadoes which has been great. Sometimes, the potatoes are not as good as I would like them to be but overall everything else is good. If there's anyone else who utilize AFM in the Nashville TN area I would love to hear your opinion. Thanks!

Sometimes, the potatoes are not as good as I would like them to be but overall everything else is good. If there’s anyone else who utilize AFM in the Nashville TN area I would love to hear your opinion. Thanks!

I have been more then satisfied with AFM and the food I have been receiving. I haven't had any problems with the meat. Maybe many of the bashers need to buy better cuts of meat because they can't cook from scratch.

I like the fact the menu is a bit different each month. I also like the time saving value of knowing what I will be getting, have it paid for and not have to use up time in the grocery store on the day I pick up my pre boxed food order.

We just picked up our first AFM order this past weekend. So far, so good!

We ordered a Signature Box ($30), a 7 lb Premium Meat Grilling Box ($23), and the Produce Box ($22). I priced out the boxes at my local Kroger’s (Houston, TX) and found out that the Signature Box is by far the best deal - saved us about $12 over Kroger’s when compared to comparable off-brand items. Everything came as described and the produce was fresh and unbruised. The hamburger patties made good burgers. The fruit has been yummy (apples and oranges). The potatoes and carrots tasted great in a stew I made yesterday. The little dinner rolls are really good too. We're having the rib-eyes tomorrow.

My husband and I ate out at restaurants and fast food joints 3-5 nights a week before trying out AFM, so we were just hoping for better than what we were eating anyway. We are happy so far and will have cut our food budget to about $350 this month instead of our normal $600. My husband and I were trying to find something to motivate us to cook at home more often and the grab-bag mentality of AFM works for me.

February 2010’s AFM Signature Box looks even better than January’s - saving us about $15 over Kroger’s. We will probably be ordering a couple of those this time around, if the meat we try this week is good, and will be ignoring the other types of boxes since I can get almost the same prices on produce locally.

Hope this helps!

We just tried AFM for the heck of it to see how it was. Not good. The meat is very fatty and actually tastes bad. We usually buy store brand food, and this stuff that came with our box wasn't even near that level in quality.

Our chicken patties are horrible tasting. I found bits of bone and a claw? in one of my patties. Plus 18 grams of fat in one patty??? The roast beef we just did in the crock pot tastes so processed it's not even worth eating. We won't be trying it again.

My wife and I are very frugal when it comes to shopping, meaning we only buy sale items and ALWAYS have coupons. We can beat these prices.

If a family has fallen on hard times such as a job loss or something, I think they can do better by clipping coupons and buying only the necessities.

Our family relied on angle food in2008 & 2009 we had a tough year with adult children at home and in an area of high unemployment for the most part we enjoyed most of the items there may have been a couple little items that were not to everyone's liking which is common in any household

We found the cost and quality to meet our expectations and quite honestly look forward to continuing our monthly orders in 2010 . Our economic situation has improved and we are finding that costs at the grocery stores have come down however we find that angle food still offers a good product at a reasonable cost and will continue to depend on their service

I am the site director for our church's AFM program. I also consider myself a savvy shopper as well as one of the most frugal people on earth. In recent months, I have seen AFM's menu improve pretty dramatically from when I first started personally purchasing. Out of curiosity, I took the September 2009 menu to both Wal-Mart and Krogers, which are the only grociers in my area for at least 10-20 miles. With calculator in hand and time on my side for once, I took the menu and pen to personally compare the menu to the exact price per ounce. My findings show that if you drove to both places to purchase the best price and purchased the lowest-price product from the selections, AFM is still $9+ cheaper. Keep in mind that does not include gas and that different markets will feature different pricing (but I have been told that the Northeast Indiana market is one of the lowest in the nation). You can see the table on our website at http://afmdekalb.org/?p=75.

I have ordered for two months from AF and will continue to order. There have been a few things that some of us did not particularly like, but for the most part, we feel it is a good value. The steaks we got were delicious, as were the hamburger patties. We steamed some of the frozen broccoli and cauliflower tonight from the December box, and it was excellent. My only suggestion to improve would be a few more healthier choices instead of the breaded items (although the hashbrowns fried in a little deep fryer were really really good!). My daughter did not like the cereal ... but my husband did.

I agree that by couponing extensively and sale shopping, I could probably match it, but I work two jobs and don't have that much time. I also have a college student son living away from home, who likes having the food there (and I know that he has some real food..lol).

It is not gourmet top of the line food in all instances, but if I could afford that, I would not be buying from AF ... I recommend trying it and seeing if you like it.
