We’ve had our Wii for a couple years now and we still play with it regularly. The boys have their favorite games (Super Mario Galaxy and Mario Super Sluggers), my husband has a few favorites (Call of Duty: World at War, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09) and I even have games I enjoy playing (Rock Band 2)

It is a fun system, and one that gets my boys up and moving and not just sitting on the floor with a joystick. If you don’t have a Wii now, I think this Christmas is the time to add one to your house!

They are currently running a contest for pictures to go along with the many recipes on their site. If your photo is chosen, you will receive a case of dessert fillings!

I like this contest because it doesn’t require the creation of an original recipe — just a great shot of a recipe. If you’re a photographer, this would be a fun contest to try your hand at! I know I’ll be sending off some shots in the next week!

Many of you will be taking 3 and 4 day weekends to celebrate.  Earlier this week, our friendly neighbor to the north, Canada, celebrated their own Canada Day.  So, I’ve decided to give Moms Love Shopping podcast the week off to celebrate, too.

Don’t worry, the podcast WILL be back!  You’ll be too busy racking up on holiday sales, shooting fireworks and grilling burgers to listen this week anyway.  Then you’ll spend all week recovering and playing catch up (or hiding those new shoes) to miss me.

I confess that I haven’t thought much about Michael Jackson in the years since high school — and a quick look at my music collection showed that I don’t even own any of his music. I headed over to Amazon this morning to check out what was available for Michael Jackson and was pretty amazed to see that there 446 songs of his available for download! I read that many major retailers (even online)sold out of his music overnight — but downloads are always available.

I didn’t buy Thriller this morning, but I did buy The Way You Make Me Feel and Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.

It’s OK to slap spendthrift wives

Naturally, I had to click on over to see if  Sharia law had indeed been adopted in the United States after I went to bed.  CNN.com reported:

Husbands are allowed to slap their wives if they spend lavishly, a Saudi judge said recently during a seminar on domestic violence, Saudi media reported Sunday.

Phew! OK, so it was a judge in Saudi Arabia.  Not that this doesn’t bother me, but it isn’t surprising coming from a country that has never valued women’s rights.   However, just one sentence later I was picking my chin up off the floor again at this:

Arab News, a Saudi English-language daily newspaper based in Riyadh, reported that Judge Hamad Al-Razine said that “if a person gives SR 1,200 [$320] to his wife and she spends 900 riyals [$240] to purchase an abaya [the black cover that women in Saudi Arabia must wear] from a brand shop and if her husband slaps her on the face as a reaction to her action, she deserves that punishment.”

Pardon Moi?!

First of all, the women are REQUIRED to wear this hideous garment.  I imagine she’ll get slapped if the garment is less than immaculately clean, slightly worn or faded, Junior slobbers on it, or (GASP) her husband is feeling macho and thinks she’s wearing it crooked.

So, to put a value on how much a woman can spend on an item of clothing she’s required to wear and give her husband carte blanche to decide it’s frivolous is beyond whacked out to me.

I hope that someday all women of the world will be given the same rights as their male companions and at the very least be treated with respect and valued.

Until then, I’m on the search for an abaya to burn for my Saudi sisters (I was too young to participate in burning my bra).  What are your thoughts on this judge’s comments? Sound off  in the comment form below!

Well I’m back from my 120-day cruise around the world where I landed in every exotic port and tropical island I could find on the map. No, I’m not sunburned because I lubed up with super extra strong SPF 50 lotion and I protected my delicate blonde tresses with the fanciest sun hats I could find.

In between all the swimming, sunbathing and relaxing on this dream cruise, I even found my Prince Charming, who swept me off my feet…

…and brought me back to the reality that is my life.

So, that’s the story I’m stickin’ with to explain my long absence (although I really DID find my Prince Charming…)  The true story would bore you to tears.

I apologize for being a negligent friend, BUT I can’t apologize for taking this much needed break because now I’m back in the game and excited to get back to work making Moms Love Shopping the premier resource for shopping deals, reviews and advice.

To show you how serious I am about this, I’d like to officially introduce you to two amazing women who have joined my team to keep this website moving forward. You may have already noticed them assisting me since the end of November when I took my suitcases and boarded the cruise ship (internet access is iffy out at sea, you know)

. Melanie Rogers is a wife and homeschooling mom of 3 children. She enjoys helping other busy moms find great products to delight their families and make their lives easier.

Kacie Pruitt is a married mother of two young sons who recently became a full time stay at home mom. She looks forward to learning how to shop on a fixed income and sharing her experiences with other moms.

Does that sound alarmist?  I know it probably does, but the truth of the matter is that many businesses have already shut their doors in anticipation of the February 10 deadline. They know they can’t afford the testing, so they’ve sold off their inventory and have started trying to figure out what to do instead.

This law puts undue burden on businesses to test and re-test items for lead and phlatates.  Wal-Mart has already told its stores that any items that do not have the certification by February 1 must be pulled from the shelves and returned to the suppliers. Libraries are planning to pull children’s books from the shelves, because the law is retroactive.

There are people in Congress who are finally beginning to understand that this was poor legislation — let your voice be heard and add to the voices that have already spoken.

Our economy is in enough trouble. Don’t let our government force more businesses to close. Don’t let our government force the ones that remain to raise their prices astronomically to cover testing costs. Don’t assume that this won’t affect you because you don’t think you ever buy anything handmade.  It goes well beyond handmande products!  It affects EVERYTHING that is produced for children ages 12 and under.

I’m hoping that next week I can blog much more positively about this issue.  Stay tuned!

The recall doesn’t cover everything made with peanut butter — but items made from peanut butter or peanut paste from the Peanut Corporation of America are included in this recall. Plain jars of peanut butter are safe.

Wondering how many items that is?  Check out the FDA page about products included to see how many items should be avoided.  The recall includes frozen dinners, packaged celery and peanut butter packs from Trader Joes, and even some ice creams!  The frozen dinners surprised me most, as I wouldn’t have thought about peanut butter in those meals.

Check out the recall page and avoid or dispose of any of the products listed.  If in doubt, throw it out!

I think it’s a powerful visual statement that I hope you take the time to check out. If nothing else, go look to see how a set of 6 crayons that used to cost $4.95, suddenly cost $10,084.95.

Remember, too, that the testing is required by every company manufacturing children’s goods.  So, while large companie may be able to come up with the testing fees, that cost will be passed right onto the consumer.

And, if you haven’t written to your Congressman yet, why not??  We need to make our voice heard on this issue, because apparently nobody in Washington thought about the ramifications.

Some libraries aren’t sure if they will need to pull all children’s books from the shelves on February 10, 2009. Until the books receive proof that they do not contain lead, booksellers will not be able to sell books marketed to children under the age of 12.

One of the crazy things about this law is that even if every item going into a product has been tested, the final product must also be tested. How could an item made of items containing no lead suddenly contain lead when they are combined?

If you have not made your voice heard about this regulation, please take the time to do so. The response has been good so far, but it’s still not enough. Your voice will be heard if you take the time to write, email, call or even just blog about this issue.

I believe in keeping my children safe. I just don’t believe this law was thought through very well, and will do more damage to our economy than protect our children.

Thankfully, the act has been modified so that second-hand stores will still be able to sell children’s goods without having them tested (although if they sell an item containing lead, they can be held liable!)  They have also modified the act so that it does not restrict the sales of natural fibers or electronics.

Unfortunately, the wording still will likely put many small businesses out of  business because of the stringent testing requirements.  Each item going into an item will need to be tested, as well as the final product.  While I agree that we should keep our children safe from poisonous toys, I feel that this act has gone too far and will punish too many individuals.

There is still time to comment on the act before February 10, 2009!  Please visit the extremely informative page over at Cool Mom Picks for links to more information and contacts.   The many voices that have spoken up have already made significant changes, let’s continue to make our voices heard and ensure that homemade goods can still be part of our children’s toy chests.

Apparently, the closing was sudden and left their 300 employees out of work. I was very heartened to read about the Lance company who just purchased the bakery from bankruptcy!  Not only did they immediately hire 60 of the workers back, but they provided a $1500 debit card to ALL the previous workers. They hope that sales from the bakery grow and that they are able to hire back all the former employees.  This article from CNN offers more details.

Lance makes snack products, including sandwich crackers (which my kids love!) While they are not currently resurrecting the Archway cookie brand, they may do so in the future.

I love to read about companies who put their employees first (or even potential employees) and I will purchase Lance products the next time I’m shopping for snack goods. I hope their business continues to grow, and that they’re able to employ more people in the Ashland, OH area!

I also like giving gifts in reusable shopping bags. You can go with something fancy, like the BAGGU Reusable Shopping Totes, or with the .99 reusable bags you can purchase at most stores these days.  These gift bags will get used over and over again, saving plenty of plastic bags from landfills.

I’ve also sewn my own gift bags using scrap fabric around the house. A simple stitch up both sides of a folded piece of fabric, and a yarn tie to hold it closed. The bags are cute and reusable in the future.

Another neat idea is Furoshiki, which is the Japanese cloth wrapping technique. The site has diagrams of different ways to wrap items in cloth.  You could use scarves, cloth napkins, and any scrap of material hiding in your craft closet.  No sewing is necessary – just the ability to tie knots.

With the recent influx of tainted and dangerous toys in the market, the U.S. government responded by creating an act to protect consumers — Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.  Unfortunately, the wording of the act will likely mean the end of handmade goods for children here in the United States and force most businesses who create those goods out of business.  The wording of the act (which goes into effect February 10, 2009) will require testing of each and every item that is used in handmade goods — including each and every color of the same item that may be used.  Companies will be required to utilize third party companies to test each item, which can easily cost thousands of dollars (if not more!)

While I believe in protecting my children from dangers, I am saddened by the thought that I will no longer be able to buy things from etsy.com, craft fairs, or any individual selling their goods.  Cool Mom Picks has put together an extremely informative post about the act and what we can do about it.   I have already sent letters to my representatives in Washington, and I hope you do the same!

This act will force many small, and larger, companies out of business with the restrictions they are imposing.  It will become almost impossible to buy handmade goods, which isn’t good for our children or our economy!  Personally, I don’t want to be forced to only buy from huge corporations and be unable to support small artisans.

Please let your voice be heard and don’t let our government force these businesses to close because they are unable to afford exorbitant testing on their products.

Be on the lookout for the best shopping deals of the Holiday season – December 8th.  You might not yet be familiar with “Green Monday,” but last year it quietly became the biggest sales day in online shopping history – even topping the more famous “Cyber Monday” (the Monday after Black Friday).

This year is predicted to be even bigger, and since companies will be looking to capitalize on this buying binge, you can expect all kinds of discounts and free shipping deals tomorrow!  Would really appreciate it if you could pass this info on to your readers, and maybe add a link to FreeShipping.org (which collects and reports coupon codes from over 850 stores that offer free shipping), to help us get the word out!
