Gift Card Drawbacks – Show #28

Gift cards are a popular and easy way to give a friend or family member a gift but there can be some hidden drawbacks that both the buyer and the recipient should be aware of.

Some companies will charge a service fee if the card sits unused for a certain number of months. A few companies even charge the purchaser a service fee at the time of purchase. No matter when the fees apply, this takes away from the value of the card, so be sure to read all the fine print.

This recent article online illustrates how loyal customers or gift card holders can be ripped off if a retailer files for bankruptcy protection. All of a sudden the $50 gift card in your wallet is useless because the company does not have the funds available to honor it. In this case, the customer who purchased the gift card has given a loan to the store.

I made out well because I was able to use coupons but I also don’t feel guilty for getting so many good deals because I wasn’t a greedy or wasteful shopper .
