Sadly, customer service training has deteriorated considerably over the past few years.

In my local area the reason is that the job boom makes it very difficult for employers to hire staff that are willing to go the extra mile for customers. I've had clients complain that finding staff willing to show up in the first place is a huge challenge and they're afraid to push them with training for fear of losing the staff!

Sadly, many employees feel that just showing up is enough.
