Helping a Child Sleep
My middle child has always had a hard time sleeping. Bedtime has been a struggle with him for years. We have always had a regular bedtime routine, a regular bedtime, and quiet time before bedtime. I have made sure he has a light snack. And, still, he has struggled with relaxing into sleep in the evenings.
He’s now six years old, and we recently went through a couple months where he would be in bed for hours before he finally fell asleep. Soft music, audiobooks, darkness — nothing seemed to help him.
About two months ago, I purchased Indigo Dreams: Relaxation and Stress Management Bedtime Stories for Children, Improve Sleep, Manage Stress and Anxiety (Indigo Dreams). To be honest, I didn’t expect much, but I had to try something new.
It works. As long as he stays still while listening to it, he’s sound asleep before the CD is over. The stories take him through some guided relaxation exercises, while keeping him quietly entertained. He has even tried some of the exercises during the day when he wants to relax.
He still struggles with bedtime. But, as long as we make sure the CD is playing and he’s tucked in, I don’t have to worry about him staying awake until after midnight.
