How to Reduce Your Utility Costs – Show #24
->
Before I get started about how to save money on your electric bill, here’s the interestingly sweet deal I scored at CVS last Saturday. Listen to the podcast to find out what’s so special about the difference in these three bottles.
Now, on to saving money on the utility bills. Every year the cost of living increases significantly and if you are one of the lucky few who actually gets a pay raise every year, when was the last time your raise matched the cost of living increases?
Electricity is an important utility that we all need to use yet many states do not allow the consumer to choose which electric company to use. Usually the company supplying your power is determined by your home’s location.
If you live in one of the states that is allowing competition among electric suppliers, be sure to take advantage of the opportunity and get some price quotes from competitors. Be wary, however, of adjustable electric rates. Just like an introductory rate with a credit card, you could enjoy a few months of a low bill and then get slammed when the rate adjusts.
Other ways to save on your electric bill is to use CFL lightbulbs throughout your home, keep your thermostat set at lower temperatures during the winter and buy energy-efficient appliances.
Resources Mentioned on Today’s Show:
- SaveOnEnergy.com – Comparison shop if you live in TX, NJ, NY, OH, IL
- PowerToChoose.org – Specifically for Texas, but the site has great information to prepare yourself with before attempting to switch providers if you live in area where you have a choice. It also offers several tips to minimize your use of electricity to keep your bill lower.
- Darn it! Right after I released the show, I found out my good friend Cara from The Household Helper just released a great ebook to help you cut energy costs in your home. Check it out!

Suze on February 11th, 2008 10:40 amSaveOnEnergy.com is a wonderful site to comparison shop…. it’s like the Hotels.com for energy rates instead of hotel rooms…..much more up to date than power to choose.
